SUMMARY
In
the last decade of this
century XX, huge transformations
occur on the world and
consequently changes the
people’ lives.
Knowing agents that act
in this process, analyze
the tendencies check effects
and results, had become
essential for rational
work with this communities.
Certain social categories
has less flexibility, so
they are more damage than
others. With the open market,
globalism, electronic communication
and e-commerce very efficient,
the professional procedures
must present a compatible
profile with the new world.
Research was accomplished
in the community of the
Barbarians and in the partnership
places that the producing
of the community used,
in the period of May to
November of 1999 in stratum
of properties with area
of up to 50 there is, that
corresponds at 98,6% of
the community’s
strata. The results showed
tendency of substitution
of the cultures of cereals
for vegetables in the small
ones and minipropriedades
and as smaller the property
more quickly these changes
are processed. It was verified
that would seem her it
is need of the mini and
small producers for reduction
of risks and modernization
of the production systems.
The changes happened in
the activities coincide
with the market changes,
negotiation with MERCOSUL
and globalização.
The size of the property
defines the culture type
with tendency in them personal
computer and small properties
to the disappearance of
the cultivation of cereals.
Smaller properties are
diversified.

SUMMARY
The
fruitculture had a great
expansion in the State
of Minas Gerais in the
last years, influencing
in a significant way in
the economy of the State
and, specifically, in the
small farmers family income.
The present work had as
objective to identify the
profile of the producing
of existent fruits in the
area of the municipal district
of you Lavras-MG, characterizing
the infrastructure, labor,
handling techniques and
technical attendance, through
questionnaires and interviews
with the producers previously
selected in EMATER. The
area is constituted in
its majority by producers
without tradition frutícola.
The fruitculture occupies
257,9 ha, standing out
the citriculture and the
culture of the fig. The
commercialization, in its
great majority, is destined
it you sell direct to the
granel in markets of the
own city, being ended that
the units of production
develop diversified productive
systems, and, in most,
the fruitculture is not
the main activity. With
the existent infrastructure,
support organs to the research
and extension, climatic
conditions and you set,
besides the productivity
of the fruitful ones already
in production, they adorn
that area with great potential
for the fruitculture.

SUMMARY
BRAZIL
Twenty one samples of raw
milk distributed for consuption
in Alfenas, Brazil, were
studied according to official
methods. These samples
were carried out for density,
acity, fat percentage ,
total dry matter, skimed
dry matter, crioscopic
point, ring-test and methylene
reduction test. Some irregularities
on the physical-chemical
and microbiological standards
were observed in all the
samples. Therefore, none
of samples was regular
for all the analysed parameters.
It becomes evident the
necessity of attitudes
to get better the quality
of raw milk distributed

SUMMARY
The
Mushroom of the Sun (Agaricus
blazei), has arisen an
important scientific and
economical interest on
a world scale, mainly after
some studies developed
in Japan allowed the discovery
and isolation of some substances
of that mushroom, with
antitumour activity. In
the present study the muisture
was determined by the indirect
process (stove at 105ºC),
lipids or ether extract
(Soxhlet), proteins (Kjeldahl),
ash or fixed mineral residue
(at 550ºC),
fiber (rude fiber), macro
and micro minerals and
glucides (nifext). The
method of Weende that is
usually used in the analyses
of centesimal composition
foods, was utilized. With
the obtained values it
was concluded that the
mushroom of the sun is
a food of high nutritional
value, rich in proteins,
fibers, minerals and with
a low content of lipids.

SUMMARY
This
work was designed to promote
the in vitro etiolation
of shoots of pineapple
cultivar Perola for further
recovery of those shoots.
The stems utilized as explants
were obtained from shoots
which were already established
in vitro, from which leaves
were removed. The MS medium
supplemented with 0.1 mg
L -1 of ANA and 0.5 mg
L -1 of BAP, MS medium
supplemented with 1.8 mg
L -1 of ANA and 2.0 mg
L -1 of BAP and MS without
growth regulators. Etiolation
was induced by putting
the explants into test
tubes of 150 x 25 mm, containing
the referred culture media
in the dark for 20, 40
and 80 days . After that
time , the etiolated shoots
were removed from the tubes
for evaluations of the
length and number of etiolated
shoots. For the varying
number of shoots, the best
medium was that of MS +
1.8 mg L -1 of ANA and
2.0 mg L -1 of BAP, where
a mean of 10.78 shoots
at 49.3 days in the dark
was obtained but those
shoots presented a length
less than 1.0 cm. For the
variable length of etiolated
shoots, the MS medium without
growth regulators was significantly
better when the explants
were kept for 80 days in
the dark presenting an
average length of 10.86
cm.

SUMMARY
Citrus
limonia Osbeck cv. Cravo.
Citrus limonia Osbeck cv.
Cravo has become to be
an alternative to the diversification
of rootstocks for Brazilian
citrus culture. Tissue
culture allows a great
number of plants in a short
space and time. This work
was accomplished in the
Plant Tissue Culture Laboratory
of the Agriculture of the
UFLA, aiming to determine
the developement of in
vitro established explants
of the rootstock Citrus
limonia Osbeck cv. Cravo
by utilizing different
dosages of sucrose in combination
with the growth regulator
IBA ( Indolbutiric acid).
The explants were made
up of nodal segments about
3 cm long, they being distributed
individually in test tubes
of 150 X 25 mm dimensions,
containing 15 ml of different
dosages of sucrose ( 00.,
15.0, 30.0, 45.0 and 60.0
g/L) in combination with
IBA ( 0.0, 1.0, 3.0 and
5.0 mg/L). Later, those
tubes were transferred
to the growth room with
16 hours of lighting at
1500 lux with temperature
of 27±1°C.
After 21 days, the following
characteristics were evaluated:
average number and length
of roots. It was found
that the best results were
obtained with 60 g/L of
sucrose in combination
with 5 mg/L of indolbutiric
acid for the two evaluated
characteristics.

PREVALENCE
OF THE ILLNESS CARIES
IN STUDENTS FROM THE
AGE OF 5 TO 14 YEARS,
IN THE CITY OF ALFENAS-
MG
|
|
LUIZ
ANTONIO SARTORI (**)
SUMMARY
The
present study is to analyze
the prevalence of the illness
caries in students registered
in elementary and high
school in the city of Alfenas – MG – Brazil
in 1997. Subjects were
550 pupils males and females
from the age of 5 to 14
years. Results indicated
a DMFt of 4,07 for the
age of 12. The DEFt for
the age of 7, was 2,18.The
average of individuos free
of caries in both dentition
with the age of 5 was 43,64%,
and at the age of 14, was
3,64. According to the
goals stablished by World
Wide Health Organization
(WHO), for the year 2000,
the ideal level to 5 age
is the 50% of individuos
free of caries, and DMFt
of 3 in 12 years. Results
were considered to be moderate,
however, above the ideal
level. If we take into
consideration the past
experience index of 3,22,
and the present experience
was of 0.85, we found that
this population has been
receiving clinical treatment
to repair. This indicate
that in order to reduce
the illness caries, prevention
programs, and education
in bucal health orientation
should be implemented among
this population.

PHARMACOLOGIC
TERAPEUTICS FOR TEMPOROMANDIBULAR
DISORDERS – A
REVIEW
|

CASSIO
ROCHA SOBREIRA (*)
MARILDA RODRIGUES ZAMPIER (**)
SUMMARY
The
Temporomandibular Disorders
(TMD) are a group of pathologies
that attack great portion
of the population. They
have multifatorial ethiology
and show through varied
simptomatology, prevailing
migraine, heardache and
orofacial pains. The improvement
or remission of these pains
should be the priority
in the treatment, being
the support therapies the
first therapeutic modalities
must be used. The medication
use can promote the decrease
or elimination of the pains,
even so, won’t
bring the cure of the problem
to the patient. In this
study we will comment through
a review of the literature
about the pharmacoterapy
use as method of control
of painful simptomatology
in TMD, approaching the
types of used medications,
its indications, contraindications,
collateral effects and
effectiveness.

SUMMARY
Carcinoid
tumor is a rare malign
neoplasm and most oftem
are asymptomatic, it originates
from the neuroendocrine
system, in different places
of digestive tract, commonly
located in 50% the ceccal
appendix 50%, presenting
an incidence approximately
of 0.06% occuring predominantly
in female adults. The carcinoid
tumor of appendix area
usually is assymptomatic
or may simulate an acute
abdominal disease, looking
like acute peritonitis.
It’s
almost always diagnosed
during an exploratory surgical
act of an acute abdominal
process. The size of the
pathological findings almost
never excedes 1.0 centimeter
in diameter, being the
a pendictomy the handling
of choice. In presence
of liver metastases the
treatment of choice is
chemioembolization of hepatic
artery. The carnerstone
of cancer diagnosis is
a precocious and precise
anatomical diagnosis in
carcinoid tumors, tthis
rule is no exception. And
it is essential to have
a good prognosis necessary
to detect carcinoid tumors
precociously and to perform
anadequate surgical act
as soon as possible.

Current
use of high-intensity
lasers for disinfection
of cavity preparations

JOSÉ EDUARDO PELIZON PELINO (**)
SUMMARY
The
last step on the cavity
preparation is the bacterial
reduction of this procedure.
It constitutes in cleaning
the debris of the walls
and the margins of the
preparation which may interfere
in both the adaptation
of the restorative material
and in the carious infection
which was previously installed.
The high selectivity of
the high intensity laser
light associated with delivery
systems such as optical
fibers enables the therapeutical
use of this light on the
bacterial reduction on
the cavity preparations.
Aiming to understand in
order to compare the different
ways of interaction between
these two high intensity
laser systems which are
largely used in Restorative
Dentistry nowadays, Nd:YAG
laser and Er:YAG laser,
two clinical case studies
will be related showing
the clinical applicability
and viability of both laser
systems in the clinic as
a decontaminant agent in
cavity preparations.

Use
of legal drugs among
university students
in Alfenas

EVANGELISTA FIORINI (*)
ADRIANA LUIZA ALVES (**)
SUMMARY
This
work reports a study about
drug consumption carried
out within a population
of academic students from
two colleges in Alfenas,
Minas Gerais state. Either
licit or illicit drugs
were considered. After
a wide revision of the
concerning bibliography
and a questionnaire with
about 23% of the academic
students (total 6500) we
concluded that there is
a significative consumption
of such drugs. However,
the pattern of drug consuption
found was similar to that
of other studies condutedbefore
either in Brazil or other
countries. Infact, 55%
of college studentsmake
use drugs. The most surprising
finding though was that
the majority of the students
who answered “ yes “ to
the proposed question “ Have
you ever triel any kind
of drugs, including alcohol
and cigarete? “ spontaneously
(88%)revealed that they
had consumed such drugs,
and these these, before
the admission to the college.
This finding clearly suggests
that the occurrence of
na aggregation of young
people into universitary
cities does not represent
itself the starting point
to drug consumption.
